Book Description:
Quote:

Before matter as we know it emerged, the universe was filled with the primordial state of hadronic matter called quark gluon plasma. This hot soup of quarks and gluon is effectively an inescapable consequence of our current knowledge about the fundamental hadronic interactions, quantum chromodynamics. This book covers the ongoing search to verify this prediction experimentally and discusses the physical properties of this novel form of matter.

Gravitation: From the Hubble Length to the Planck Length

Taylor & Francis | 198 pages | 2004-10 | 0750309482 | PDF | 5.5 MB

Although gravity is the dominant force of nature at large distances (from intermediate scales to the Hubble length), it is the weakest of forces in particle physics, though it is believed to become important again at very short scales (the Planck length). The conditions created in particle accelerators are similar to those at the time of the early universe. While particle physics offers insight to early universe physics, there is a need to understand gravity at extremes of large and short distances to further understand cosmology and the development of the universe. Gravitation: From the Hubble Length to the Planck Length fulfills this need by providing an overview of relativistic astrophysics, early universe physics, cosmology, and their interface with particle physics. Written by international experts, this reference presents up-to-date information on classical relativity, astrophysics, and theoretical and experimental particle physics. The introduction sets the scene and provides a context for the remaining chapters. Chapters cover an extensive array of topics, from refined experimental techniques in gravitational physics to cosmology and the quantum frontier. The book concludes with a discussion of the connection among particles, fields, strings, and branes. This compilation shows how gravity plays a fundamental role in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology by exploring domains from the microscopic, such as black holes, to superclusters of galaxies that form the large-scale texture of the present-day cosmos. Moreover, with its theoretical and experimental focus on the foundations of gravity, Gravitation proves to be an invaluable resource for current and future research.

Book Description:

This textbook is a modern, concise and focused treatment of the mathematical techniques, physical theories and applications of rigid body mechanics, bridging the gap between the geometric and more classical approaches to the topic. It emphasizes the fundamentals of the subject, stresses the importance of notation, integrates the modern geometric view of mechanics and offers a wide variety of examples -- ranging from molecular dynamics to mechanics of robots and planetary rotational dynamics. The author has unified his presentation such that applied mathematicians, mechanical and astro-aerodynamical engineers, physicists, computer scientists and astronomers can all meet the subject on common ground, despite their diverse applications.

Optimization Algorithms in Physics

ISBN: 3527403078
Title: Optimization Algorithms in Physics
Author: Alexander K. Hartmann
Publisher: Wiley-VCH

Summary:
The past few years have witnessed a substantial growth in the number of applications for optimization algorithms in solving problems in the field of physics. Examples include determining the structure of molecules, estimating the parameters of interacting galaxies, the ground states of electronic quantum systems, the behavior of disordered magnetic materials, and phase transitions in combinatorial optimization problems.
This book serves as an introduction to the field, while also presenting a complete overview of modern algorithms. The authors begin with the relevant foundations from computer science, graph theory and statistical physics, before moving on to thoroughly explain algorithms - backed by illustrative examples. They include pertinent mathematical transformations, which in turn are used to make the physical problems tractable with methods from combinatorial optimization. Throughout, a number of interesting results are shown for all physical examples. The final chapter provides numerous practical hints on software development, testing programs, and evaluating the results of computer experiments.

Mathematical Methods of Classical Mechanics
V. I. Arnold - Mathematical Metods of Classical Mechanics

V. I. Arnold - Mathematical Metods of Classical Mechanics
Author: Vladimir I. Arnold | Publisher: Springer-Verlag | ISBN 0387968903 | 2nd. Ed. 1989 | djvu, 519 pages | language: english | 4 MB

In this text, the author constructs the mathematical apparatus of classical mechanics from the beginning, examining all the basic problems in dynamics, including the theory of oscillations, the theory of rigid body motion, and the Hamiltonian formalism. This modern approch, based on the theory of the geometry of manifolds, distinguishes iteself from the traditional approach of standard textbooks. Geometrical considerations are emphasized throughout and include phase spaces and flows, vector fields, and Lie groups. The work includes a detailed discussion of qualitative methods of the theory of dynamical systems and of asymptotic methods like perturbation techniques, averaging, and adiabatic invariance.

This book is an example of great scientific writing style. Not all the epsilon and deltas are spelled out, and yet the the proofs are nowhere short of rigorous. Besides, they convey insight and intuition: the opposite of Gallavotti’s “the element of mechanics” (a very competent book, but obsessed with details). As all the great mathematicians, Arnold separates what’s essential from what is not, what is interesting from what is pedantic. The result is a challenging, wonderful book.

V.I Arnold is professor of Mathematics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. His research in the theory of differential equations (dynamical systems, stability theory, celestial and classical mechanics) has brought him world wide recognition as an outstanding mathematician and scientist. He was awarded the Lenin Prize for his work on stability theory with Kolmogorov.

A Dressing Method in Mathematical Physics
Evgeny V. Doktorov, Sergey B. Leble "A Dressing Method in Mathematical Physics"
Springer | 2007-07-11 | ISBN:1402061382 | PDF | 386 pages | 4,4 Mb

This monograph systematically develops and considers the so-called "dressing method" for solving differential equations (both linear and nonlinear), a means to generate new non-trivial solutions for a given equation from the (perhaps trivial) solution of the same or related equation. The primary topics of the dressing method covered here are: the Moutard and Darboux transformations discovered in XIX century as applied to linear equations; the Bäcklund transformation in differential geometry of surfaces; the factorization method; and the Riemann-Hilbert problem in the form proposed by Shabat and Zakharov for soliton equations, plus its extension in terms of the d-bar formalism.
Throughout, the text exploits the linear experience of presentation, with special attention given to the algebraic aspects of the main mathematical constructions and to practical rules of obtaining new solutions. Various linear equations of classical and quantum mechanics are solved by the Darboux and factorization methods. An extension of the classical Darboux transformations to nonlinear equations in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions, as well as its factorization, are also discussed in detail. Whats more, the applicability of the local and non-local Riemann-Hilbert problem-based approach and its generalization in terms of the d-bar method are illustrated via various nonlinear equations.

Tensor Algebra and Tensor Analysis for Engineers: With Applications to Continuum Mech

Publisher: Springer
Language: English
ISBN: 3540360468
Paperback: 244 pages
Data: Mar 2007

Description:

There is a large gap between the engineering course in tensor algebra on the one hand and the treatment of linear transformations within classical linear algebra on the other hand. The aim of the book is to bridge this gap by means of the consequent and fundamental exposition. The book is addressed primarily to engineering students with some initial knowledge of matrix algebra. Thereby the mathematical formalism is applied as far as it is absolutely necessary. Numerous exercises provided in the book are accompanied by solutions enabling an autonomous study. The last chapters of the book deal with modern developments in the theory of isotropic an anisotropic tensor functions and their applications to continuum mechanics and might therefore be of high interest for PhD-students and scientists working in this area.

Review
‘This is a beautifully crafted book. … Peter Szekeres presents in the most elegant and compelling manner a magnificent overview of how classic areas such as algebra, topology, vector spaces and differential geometry form a consistent and unified language that has enabled us to develop a description of the physical world reaching a truly profound level of comprehension. … Szekeres’s style is clear, thorough and immensely readable. His selection of topics concentrates on areas where a fully developed rigorous mathematical exposition is possible. … One cannot help but be slightly awed by the beauty and the capability with which seemingly abstract concepts, often developed in the realms of pure mathematics, turn out to be applicable … I recommend that you get hold of this book for yourself or for your library.’ Times Higher Education Supplement
