 Cd-Rom: The Herbal Pharmacy  INTRODUCTION Greetings Welcome to The Herbal Pharmacy CD Rom. We hope that this CD will help you benefit from the wonderful healing properties of plants as well as guide you to using them safely and effectively. Herbal medicine is one of the most time-tested human traditions on the face of the Earth. The information you are about to read has been well researched, and although the modern scientific method has given us great insights into herbs, more research is needed and will certainly continue. Nonetheless, herbal medicine has benefited millions of people for thousands of years. I myself have been a practitioner for over 27 years, and my undiminished enthusiasm for herbal healing stems from my experiences of seeing herbs help many lives. A bibliography is also provided which will, I hope, guide you to some of the excellent and detailed literature available in the field of herbal medicine. Health is a gift that makes life worthwhile. Herbs can certainly help us along that path, but they should not be relied upon simply as a band-aid to fix a health problem. I encourage you to look deeply at the causes of illness and seek to live a healthier lifestyle whenever possible. This includes having healthy relationships, eating a wholesome diet, and exercising. We must also avoid the things that damage health, such as stress, smoking, exposure to pollutants, and an unhealthy lifestyle. Provided in this program is information on how to use herbs, as well as herbal blends. Each herbal description includes contraindictions, such as dangerous side effects, to which you should pay careful attention. Many of the contraindications only occur in extremely large doses and would never be a problem with normal use. However, there are some plants that should best be used with professional counsel, and many should be avoided during pregnancy. In listing contraindications, I have chosen to err on the side of safety, rather than ignore any potential dangers. Remember – just because something is from a plant does not mean it is appropriate for everyone to use at all times. In Chinese medicine, different foods have different characteristics, described as energetics. This program is not intended to teach Chinese herbalism, but it does provide the energetics for each herb. I must admit that not everyone agrees on whether an herb is cool, cold or warm. As American herbalism evolves the use of energetics will become a more genuine and accurate part of our own healing tradition, with more agreement between herbal practitioners. Even though some of the constituents of the plants are listed, herbalists usually prefer to use plants in a more whole form. I firmly believe that using the entire herb, with all of its components, is more effective and often safer than using any one component. Many herbs are becoming endangered. Please support local organic farming by buying herbs from reputable sources, and please avoid harvesting any endangered species. With the burgeoning interest in herbs, we must be careful not to threaten any more species, and you should consider the joy that comes from growing some of these plants yourself. Allow me to close on a personal note. During my time as an herbalist I have been blessed by a joyous life, collecting and preparing food from the wild, making medicines that really work, and keeping my family healthy with herbs. I have a private practice, lecture nationally, write magazine articles, and appear on a weekly radio show – all on the subject of herbs. It is truly something I never tire of, and it is a privilege to help people reconnect with the blessings of Creation.
