In developing this edition of Control Systems: Principles and Design, the goal was to improve the textbook without disturbing its basic foundation. We continue to emphasize frequency-domain design methods for using root locus and Nyquist/Bode/Nichols plots; augmented with state variable methods for control system analysis. To prepare the student for industrial practice, the basics of digital control have been included. This has been achieved without using the z-transforms; increasing the breadth of coverage by including z-transform theory would have been at the cost of the depth of the subject covered in the book.

Most of the textbooks on control theory include primarily motion-control application examples. This background is appropriate for control engineering practice in manufacturing industry. To prepare a student for practice in process industry, additional knowledge on slow and complex nature of industrial processes, and their control using tunable PID controllers, is essential. A balanced presentation of motion-control and process-control application case studies is a unique feature of this book. The real-life problems have been suitably tailored to the level of the text, unlike many other presentations wherein the problems are more advanced than the text itself.

The use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is universal for practising engineers in this field, as in most other fields. An appendix has been added to integrate learning of control system analysis and design material with learning of how to compute the answers with MATLAB—the most widely used CAD software package in universities. The appendix is not meant to be a substitute for the MATLAB software manuals; rather, it will help guide the reader to the appropriate places in the manuals for specific computations. The manuals are the best source of learning the package; our attempt in the book is only to expedite the process of making full use of the power of the package for control system design problems. MATLAB problems included in the appendix give the student practice with problem solving using computers.

Recently some authors have integrated MATLAB with the text. We have pushed MATLAB-aided learning environment to an appendix; the main flow of the text is not MATLABbased. This decision is based on the belief that to use CAD software packages effectively, the student must first understand the basics of the method being used so that the results from the computer can be evaluated and checked for reasonableness by independent analysis. It is mandatory that the student retain the ability to compute simple answers by hand.

The book is decidedly longer than what can be covered in a semester. But all topics covered in the book contribute to the subject. In fact, the complete coverage and balance offered by the book is its characteristic feature, and putting it in students’ hands is of great value from the point of view of industrial practice.

Many suggestions have been made by the instructors for reorganizing the book in a way that basic material usually covered by most undergraduate first control courses will be retained and other topics shifted to the companion book. In the light of these suggestions, the chapter on Nonlinear Systems has been shifted to the companion book : Gopal M., Digital Control and State Variable Methods: Conventional and Neural-Fuzzy Control Systems, 2nd edition, New Delhi: Tata McGraw-Hill, 2002.

Certain topics which interrupt the main flow without substantially adding to the knowledge, have been deleted. Review Questions, and a Control Theory Quiz comprising questions with multiple-choice answers have been added; this material should serve the purpose of self-appraisal for the reader.

I appreciate the efforts of students, faculty, and other users who have kept in touch with me. Certain technical points which needed clarification were brought to my attention. I have attempted to address each concern and have corrected every known error.
